Restaurants & Food in Bermuda
Choosing a Restaurant
A delicious meal is the perfect complement to a long day on the pink sand beaches or seeing the many sights on the islands. Choosing a restaurant can be a daunting task, though. There are hotel restaurants, fine dining restaurants, pubs, delis and small local shops. In addition to the number of places to eat, there are several choices when it comes to types of cuisine. Some of the options you can choose from include Bermudian, Indian, Mexican, Chinese, Jamaican, British, Irish, Italian and even a bit of fast food.
Dress Code for Restaurants in Bermuda
For most restaurants on the islands there is a dress code, so don’t plan to come in straight from the beach wearing your swimming attire. Casual is fine during the day but don’t be afraid to dress up a bit for the evenings. If you are planning ahead, ask about the dress code when making your reservations. Making reservations is a good idea in general because many of the more popular restaurants won’t have immediate seating available without a reservation.
Seafood is Popular
Now you are on to ordering food. What you order will largely depend on your personal tastes and the establishment that you choose, but as you are in Bermuda you will likely find a large selection of seafood on the menu. Restaurants in Bermuda serve everything from Rockfish and Wahoo to Tuna and mahi-mahi. Do not assume that all the seafood is caught locally and fresh. Much of the fish in Bermuda is imported from the United States. Ask your server which fish are locally caught.
Dining Prices Can be Higher in Bermuda
Be prepared for the bill. Unlike the islands of the Caribbean, Bermuda currency is interchangeable with American currency. With the majority of the food being imported and the matching currency rate, Bermuda dining prices are generally higher than the prices of similar restaurants in the United States or Canada. Transportation to the establishment is an additional cost whether you are riding a scooter or catching the bus. If you are staying at a hotel, it is a good idea to try their dining options. If you are planning a trip to Bermuda, ask prospective hotels about their dining options. Many hotels have very affordable rates for guests, and some hotels will allow you to dine at other hotels for their reduced rate so you get a bit of variety.
The fine dining restaurants are a wonderful addition to any trip to Bermuda. However, talking to someone local about their favorite place to dine out is a great way to find a hidden gem of a restaurant. Don’t always look at the brochures for somewhere to eat. Eating truly Bermudian food only comes by finding truly Bermudian places to eat where the locals call home.
